The Eyeful Gallery is proud to present a solo show of work by Portland based artist Alec Neal. Alec’s work display’s a raw visual energy rarely seen outside of our dreams. Vivid colors and ornate patterns intricately weave together visual texture and depth. Subtle anthropomorphic figures, and alien architecture start to emerge during prolonged viewing, drawing the participant into the space.

So please come on down to Eyeful Gallery for this first Thursday Artwalk in lovely Portland, Oregon. Just bring an umbrella I heard it might rain.

To see photos just move cursor along the space above.

Eyeful Gallery is proud to present in the Month of June, Josh Sands with a solo show of new work entitled, “Hyperbole.” Speaking briefly with the artist he had this to say about the show.

“Humor and whimsy entirely overwhelmed my process when creating these works. What is here on display is a series of 3 dimensional sculptures that act like 2 dimensional collage. Combined with my natural tendencies of embellishment, and experimentation with borosilicate glass as a sculptural medium.”

A series of cut and paste paper collage was also hung on the walls seen in conjunction with the 3 dimensional objects. These works complimented the sculpture by adding further dimensions of fantasy and absurdity to the viewer.

To conact Josh Sands email us at eyefulgallery@gmail.com or at jglensands@yahoo.com

September 2009 first Thursday was a fun and successful night at Eyeful Gallery. On display were pieces by Josh Sands, Freeman Corbin, and Flynn Helper based around the idea of ready-made or easily altered.

The main attraction of the evening was a large collage created in collaboration between Flynn and Josh, “Cape Town.” It all started with a large black and white print of a photograph of Amsterdam. Then the piece morphed into its own, under the tutelage of the two artists. The end product was delightfully trashy, exciting, and appealing. Bursting with color, and celebrities as if Amsterdam were invaded by Hollywood. Even though Cape Town appears in the lower left. The artists claim that the process was entirely intuitive and interpretation is left to the viewer.

Other pieces included in the show were two collages, three glass assemblages, and three t-shirts moonlighting as paintings made by Josh.

The t-shirt pieces presented a unique approach to painting or drawing. Based around the ready-made idea pioneered by Marcel Duchamp, and others. These pieces were meant to reflect the intrinsic artistic nature of the textiles themselves. All the while maintaining a co-existence with its being; by altering their appearance little. Furthermore a conclusion may point to the artistic nature of all humans and the world around them. If something as simple and common as a t-shirt can be art, then we are surely surrounded by art everywhere. Hinting at the fact that we are all artists.

Finally the last piece in the show was another collaboration between Josh and Freeman. It was another collage, recalling the experience of flying and the view from up above. Large patches of blue leave the impression of a flowing river, brown patches look like farmland. Often times it is true the devil is in the details, so upon further inspection details emerge. Several of Earth’s natural and man-made wonders co-mingle in the small space.

It is not clear exactly what art is, but what is clear is that experimentation and constant re-evaluation of that question is necessary to artists. On display were fine examples of blurred lines between the parameters of art.

Check it out: When The National Geographic was recently in town, one of their first stops was The Eyeful Gallery! I believe that’s a blurry shot of artist Josh Sands struttin’ through on First Thursday? Check out their entire photostream from Portland here.
